    Minnesota's NVLAP accredited and NIST recognized metrology laboratory seeks to onboard a metrologist to our team. The current customer workload includes mass (echelons I, II, and III) and volume (transfer and gravimetric) calibrations. Weights and Measures serves organizations that participate in and regulate commerce across Minnesota, the Midwest, and North America. Joining our metrology team will allow you to serve your neighbors by helping to ensure a fair and competitive market place every day. A new Metrologist will gain proficiency in mass and volume calibration procedures via on-the-job training and successful completion of NIST OWM courses. Additional projects include working with the Metrology team to foster continual improvement to the team, the quality management system, customer service, continued compliance with ISO/ICE 17025, NIST OWM, and NVLAP requirements, and possible expansions of the laboratory scope.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Two (2) years of professional experience in legal metrology. Such experience may include:

    Mass and/or volume calibrations, field work as PIS agent or W&M inspector, experience completing complex math equations up to and including statistics, evaluating compliance to standards or statutes, auditing documents, working within strict Quality Management System (QMS), following Standard Operating Procedures , gaining compliance from customers, evaluating calibration certificates, control charts, and data sheets for thoroughness.

    A Bachelor's degree in Math, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Metrology or similar fields substitutes for one (1) year of professional experience.

    A master's degree in the above listed fields substitutes for eighteen (18) months of professional experience.

    Applicants who meet the above experience requirements will be further evaluated based on the following

    • Sufficient math skills to participate in NIST OWM training, complete calibrations, complete statistical analysis, evaluate control charts, convert units, and apply tolerance tables. Math abilities assessed during interview process with a math assessment.

    • Good verbal and written communication skills.

    • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Tracking software such as IndySoft).

    • Ability to work effectively on a team or on individual projects.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Successful completion of NIST Office of Weights and Measures Fundamentals of Metrology course or Advanced NIST Office of Weights and Measures Courses.

    • Knowledge of NIST Handbook 105 series, NIST Handbook 143 series, NIST Handbook 150 series, ASTM E617, OIML R111, MN Statute 239, Department of Commerce Rules 7601 and 7602 as they relate to calibration and metrological traceability.

    • Participation in any of the following organizations: NVLAP, ASTM, NCWM, or NCSLI national or regional associations.

    • Previous experience with VBA, Macros, or any other programming languages.

    • Ability to follow standard operating, administrative and laboratory procedures.

    • Demonstrated experiences working effectively with others from different backgrounds and cultures.

    Physical Requirements

    Physical abilities (assessed via a fit-for-duty assessment test) sufficient to lift 30 kg (67lbs) and carefully place it on a balance and repeatedly climb a 15-foot staircase.
