  • We are currently seeking a Financial Operations Manager . Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Financial Operations Manager is a key position within Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) and will interface with a wide array of staff, faculty, and internal and external business partners regarding accounting, financial compliance, and financial reporting. The position will also provide oversight of JHTV's financial systems and co-mentor a team of 6 finance personnel day-to-day to oversee an array of processes and transactions, with a goal of maintaining data accuracy and internal audit controls.

    The Financial Operations Manager will work closely with the Director of Finance to oversee the full scope of JHTV's financial model. This position will routinely interact with JHU's Central administration, to include Office of Planning and Budget, Johns Hopkins Internal Audits, Cash Accounting, Treasury, General Accounting, Development and Alumni relations, Shared Services, and Facilities and Real Estate.

    The Financial Operations Manager will be a specialist in all financial and data management systems used by JHTV and will have a key role in development of new policies, system processes, and automations to ensure strong resource stewardship, operational efficiency, consistent financial performance, risk mitigation, and financial management across all operations. This role will regularly review financial and reporting processes to identify opportunities for improvement and will lead development projects.

    The Financial Operations Manager will oversee JHTV's current use gift, endowment, and sponsored research portfolio to ensure revenue and expense activity remains compliant with donor, sponsored guidelines, and Johns Hopkins University's fund balance policies. S/he will work closely with the Central Administration, gift and sponsored program staff, and finance personnel to ensure alignment.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    Financial Reporting

    • Closely supports the Director of Finance in formulation of JHTV's annual budget and five-year plan and quarterly financial reporting to the Office of Planning and Budget. . Enters data into complex budgeting systems and templates.

    • Implements standardized templates and accounting structures to enhance and streamline reporting functions.

    • Maintains compliance with JHU's GAAP accounting, cash accounting, fund balance accounting, gift accounting, endowment accounting, and sponsored accounting policies.

    • Ensures accurate monthly closing of JHTV's Technology Transfer financial operations to support alignment between JHTV's internal finance system and JHU's central accounting system.

    • Oversees monthly reporting of JHTV's global operating results, key expense and revenue drivers, and key performance metrics for presentation to leadership. Provides analytical insight and makes recommendations.

    • Responds to wide range of recurring and ad-hoc reporting requests from university and external stakeholders; ensures deadlines are met.

    • Coordinates with the Data Visualization and Strategic Initiatives teams on dashboarding projects. Seeks automated solutions for enhanced reporting to stakeholders.

    • Monitors and reports sponsored program expenditures for a small portfolio of awards.

    • Analyzes non-financial metrics reporting to support leadership decision making.

    • Continuously monitors JHTV's reporting portfolio with a goal of leveraging existing software tools and automation options to improve and streamline.

    Financial Operations & Compliance

    • Works closely with the Director of Finance to oversee JHTV financial and accounting operations.

    • Works closely with JHTV finance staff, JHU Cash Accounting, Treasury, General Accounting, and Shared Services to transact all incoming cash entries and outgoing disbursements.

    • Oversees monthly reconciliations of accounting postings to ensure accuracy between JHU and JHTV financial systems.

    • Provides high level explanation of complex accounting issues and takes lead on resolutions. Implements new protocols for increased accuracy.

    • Manages JHTV's chart of accounts, setting up new accounts and closing existing accounts in accordance JHU accounting guidelines.

    • Manages the year-end fiscal closing process, to include deficit curing and settlement activity.

    • Serves as a subject matter expert on a variety of JHU and JHTV systems. Suggests optimizations and leads special projects to increase efficiency.

    • Manages GAAP accrual and journal transfer activity to support JHTV's funding model, designated program activity, and Technology Transfer functions.

    • Manages domestic and international tax deliverables, equity reporting, and conflict of interest reporting relating in coordination with JHU Tax Office, Investments Office, and COI Office.

    • Works closely with Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), General Accounting, and JHTV program staff to transact gift and endowment revenue and expenditures according to JHU guidelines.

    • Coordinates with JHTV Human Resources and JHTV program staff to allocate staff effort to gift and sponsored funding.

    • Manages continuous, annual, and ad-hoc internal and external audit deliverables.

    • Develops action plans for implementation of audit recommendations.

    • Meets regularly with finance personnel to audit processes and routine tasks.

    • Oversees JHTV's procurement and business reimbursement portfolio. Provides oversight to staff and enforces JHU guidelines and policies.

    • Plays key role in the creation and revision of policies and procedures to govern global office finance operations, including manuals, job aids, standardized templates, and workflows.

    Financial Systems & Workflows

    • Regularly reviews JHTV systems to identify development projects to address growing business demands and reporting needs.

    • Regularly audits staff usage of JHTV's internal financial systems and shared workflows to identify improvement opportunities.

    • Coordinates closely with Director of Finance, IT Manager, Database Manager, , and software providers to map processes and build new tools and templates.

    Leadership & Staff Development

    • Co-Leads meetings with the finance team to ensure an open and collaborative work environment where information is shared, and challenges are discussed.

    • Plays key role in JHTV Finance strategic planning to identify and implement improvement projects.

    • Provides daily guidance on all financial questions. Provides training and direction to a wide range of staff.

    • Promotes and models a culture of exceptional customer service.

    • Demonstrates leadership and delivers measurable results by effectively mentoring team members.

    • Represents JHTV in meetings pertaining to central initiatives, such as new project phases for the Oracle Budget System and Project Sightline.

    • Establishes collegial partnerships with leadership across the Johns Hopkins entity to ensure cross-divisional information sharing and connectivity.

    • Models good knowledge management behavior and insists on similar behavior from staff.

    • Must possess strong computer skills (MS Word, PowerPoint) and be an advanced Excel user.

    • SAP and Oracle experience.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.

    • Five years related financial/accounting and financial management experience, e.g. planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controlling the monetary resources of a department, center, or unit.

    • Additional education (master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • US citizen or legal permanent resident due to federal export controls.

    • CPA and/or MBA a plus.

    • Knowledge of JHU accounting systems and software preferred.
