  • Whether you are looking for a new career or a soon-to-be high school graduate looking to join this amazing team, look no further! Through a collaborative effort with the Pennsylvania College of Technology, UPMC is offering a 16-week paid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training program .

    The EMT Pre-Apprenticeship program is designed to prepare the participant for National Registry cognitive and psychomotor examinations at the EMT level while maintaining full-time employment with UPMC. The student will be hired as an EMT Intern while participating in the training program. Trainees will move into Emergency Medical Technician positions after successfully completing the program and acquiring certification.

    You must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license to apply.

    Tuition and other fees are paid for by UPMC Susquehanna Regional Emergency Medical Services

    • Education Agreement: A one-year work commitment to UPMC SREMS is required.

    Get paid while you learn. Earn $17.38 per hour during the paid training program. Upon promotion into a full-time EMT role the hourly rate increases to $17.78.

    • Full-time EMTs are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus.

    o A one-year work commitment is required. This will run concurrently with the one-year Education Agreement.

    *The successful candidate will enroll, attend, and successfully complete all requirements of a state-approved EMT education program. Classes begin August 20, 2024, and run through December 12, 2024.

    As an EMT Intern, you will perform field rotations with the knowledge, skills, and behavior learned during the state-approved EMT education program. Field rotations will begin with observation and progress to patient contact, assessment, and assisting with patient treatment. All tasks and patient contact will be under the direction of an employed and certified EMT or Paramedic with UPMC/Susquehanna Regional EMS.

    Responsibilities

    • Demonstrates cognitive competency of EMT knowledge measured by quizzes and examinations.

    • Demonstrates psychomotor competency of EMT skills measured by completion of practical stations and field performance.

    • Demonstrates successful completion of the required number of field contacts, field objectives, and scheduled field hours at Susquehanna Regional EMS.

    • Responds to emergency and non-emergency ambulance responses to provide efficient and immediate care to include the critically injured or ill.

    • Selects and uses personal protective equipment appropriate to the level of anticipated hazard.

    • Interacts and communicates with a diverse group of patients utilizing customer service skills.

    • Perform patient assessment and patient care at the basic life support level for patients of all age groups, including the initiation of prehospital care in accordance with established standards or policies to patients suffering from traumatic injuries or medical emergencies.

    • Perform necessary communication with the communications center and fire/EMS units utilizing UHF, VHF, and cellular telephones.

    • Commit to high-quality, safe work; encourage others to have similar standards. Identify processes/systems that could lead to inefficient practices, unsafe conditions, errors, or adverse events. Understand that patient safety is everyone's responsibility.

    • Complete patient records and required state charts on all transports and transfers performed. Complete a legible narrative description of the patient's condition.

    • Operate emergency vehicles, ambulances, wheelchair vans, and passenger vans under routine and emergency conditions in a safe, controlled manner in accordance with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Vehicle Code and the Department of Health. Provide prehospital transportation of emergency or non-emergency patients, locally, out of region, or out of state.

    • Perform support functions such as restocking and inventory maintenance of supplies and equipment, cleaning of equipment, transport of equipment, transport of specimens to diagnostic testing areas, and transport of equipment (inter- and intra-departmental).

    High School Diploma (or equivalent) required.

    18 years of age or older.

    Gain successful enrollment to a Penn College EMT program to include FISDAP entrance examination.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

    Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Driver's License

    • Successful obtainment of National Registry Certification at the EMT level within 30 days of course completion.

    • Successful obtainment of Pennsylvania Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification with Emergency Medical Services Vehicle Operator (EMSVO) endorsement within 30 days of course completion.

    • Successful completion of the Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT) program.

    • Successful completion of the Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) program.

    • Successful completion of the American Heart Association CPR program for Healthcare Providers.

    • Successful completion of a Hazardous Materials - Awareness level program. Successful completion of

    • NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, & 800 programs.
