  • We are seeking an Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion who will be an executive staff member reporting to the Dean at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education (SOE) and is a member of the SOE Administrative Leadership Team (ALT). The ADDEI will work closely with colleagues across the SOE and with other University leaders, including the Chief Diversity Officer, to nurture a fair, equitable, inclusive community that provides ample opportunities for the SOE's diverse community of students, faculty, and staff to engage and develop as professionals and colleagues.

    The ADDEI will lead the development of a vision and effective strategy that champions the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive environment. Working with the SOE's students, staff, and faculty leaders, the ADDEI will promote opportunities that build a welcoming and inclusive culture and will assess potential barriers to strategic initiatives regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. The ADDEI will oversee the SOE's diversity efforts and initiatives, advise the Dean, and play a lead role in evaluating the current practices and culture of SOE.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    • Support the SOE's adoption of inclusive practices in all its organizational functions.

    • In partnership with Human Resources, assess and develop policies, practices and programs that support efforts to recruit and retain a diverse workforce.

    • Collaborate across the SOE's units to implement, and monitor programs designed to ensure fair and equitable treatment.

    • Promote SOE's commitment to DEI through interactions with individuals and agencies inside and outside the organization.

    • Partner with other members of ALT and SOE units to identify opportunities for DEI initiatives that connect to the SOE's academic programs and research portfolio.

    • Gather, research, and analyze data to inform decision-making that promotes SOE DEI initiatives.

    • Advise SOE leadership to ensure current and proposed programs and policies are consistent with DEI goals.

    • In partnership with the SOE Assistant Dean for Communication and Marketing, revise and update communication on internal documents and other publications/messages to ensure use of non-discriminatory language.

    • Act as a consultant across SOE to make sure all voices are heard, and our community is a respectful, supportive, and critical community.

    • Craft regularly updated DEI strategies to be responsive to feedback from members of the SOE community.

    • Develop sustainable budgets to support SOE DEI programming.

    • Represent SOE on the JHU Diversity Leadership Council.

    • Supervise a staff of two (2) to include overseeing their daily duties, completing annual reviews, assisting with their professional development.

    Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    • Demonstrated ability to design and articulate an optimistic and strategic vision that promotes DEI goals.

    • A recognized thought-leader on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to present recommendations and proposals in a concise and understandable manner and thereby win the confidence of others.

    • Ability to handle a broad set of responsibilities as a strategic leader.

    • Highest level of personal integrity to inspire confidence, respect, and trust.

    • Ability to build credibility, communicate and influence at all levels of the university.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Master's Degree in Communication, Marketing, or related field.

    • Five to Seven years managerial level, progressively responsible administrative or leadership related to diversity, equity, and inclusion program development and assessment experience.

    • A terminal degree may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience leading DEI in an academic environment.

    • Earned Ph.D. and knowledge of the research in a DEI related area.
