Will Being Handsome Hurt Me in My Job Hunt?

Appearance is an important factor during a job interview. Employers are seeking candidates who are well-groomed and who can present themselves professionally with acceptable hygiene practices. It is possible, though, that a handsome appearance can hurt you during the job search and interview process, especially if you are a male.

A handsome man may pose a threat to hiring managers during the job interview. Studies such as those conducted by the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business and the University College of London have shown that when people are asked to evaluate candidates for a job, men who are attractive or handsome are viewed subconsciously as potential competitors.

Attractiveness may work against candidates during the job interview, but only if potential employers have a competitive nature or are unwilling to collaborate with individuals whom they feel threatened by in the workplace. In many cases, the tendency is to hire attractive individuals for positions that require cooperation. Confidence is important during the job search, but attractive men must avoid posing a threat to the jobs of others, which is ultimately the fear of some hiring managers when selecting candidates for a position.

Handsome men may initially pose a threat during a job interview, but if the candidate focuses on skills and experience that ultimately benefit the company, it is possible to overcome the disadvantage that accompanies attractiveness. Avoid relying on looks and appearance to nab the position. Focus on how your skills and abilities can impact and improve productivity and profits. Detail how you would like to mesh with the company culture and show that you are eager, flexible and collaborative during a job interview.

Politeness can also help lessen biases toward attractive men and women. Be outgoing during the interview and employment-related correspondence, maintain straight posture and offer a firm handshake. Ensure your body language is positive, and avoid wearing accessories or jewelry that are distracting or perfume or cologne that is too strong. Keep your appearance intact, but let a cheerful and positive personality shine through, too.

Studies may show that first impressions of handsome men can be threatening, but once hired, attractive male employees may have an advantage once hired. Handsome men typically earn more money, up to 13 percent more, throughout their careers and get promoted faster. Paying close attention to your appearance may also attract more clients and customers to the company's product and services, especially if you seek to work in the sales industry.

First impressions matter. Though It is difficult to predict how potential employers will view your appearance during a job interview, prepare by presenting the best version of yourself and focus on communicating your skills and experience to put your best foot forward.
