Life Has to be More Than Just Job Searching

Take some of the stress out of your job search by focusing on the positive. Although you might be anxious about finding just the right position, try to see your time between jobs as a period of excitement and change, giving you new opportunities to learn about yourself and the world. Improve your work-life balance by focusing on some of the following areas, and take time every day to relax and learn new things.

Follow Your Curiosity

Expand your knowledge by following your natural curiosity to help you learn new things. Did you have any childhood interests that fell by the wayside? What topics spark your curiosity? If possible, set aside time in your weekly schedule to pursue these interests while taking a break from your job search. These new pursuits might not be directly tied your future career, but they will improve your work-life balance and help you grow into a well-rounded employee.

Find the Humor

Let yourself laugh at the stressful situations you encounter during your job search. There is usually some humor to be found when problems arise. Accidentally posting a resume with a misspelled name is certainly worth a chuckle before you fix it and remind yourself to proofread better the next time. When a website sends you on a circuitous route or you see a business name that tickles your funny bone, laugh out loud enjoying the moment. Research shows that laughter increases oxygen intake and decreases stress hormones to improve physical state directly as well as boosting your mood.

Practice Creativity

It is easy to become discouraged when your job search doesn't seem to be going well. Creating something is a great way to improve your sense of self-worth and expand your mind. Don't worry about quality. The point is not to make a great work of art but to simply get in the habit of being creative. Spend a few minutes sketching each day or sign up for an evening sip-and-paint event. Some other creative options include woodworking, writing or playing a musical instrument.

Learn to Meditate

Meditating is a great way to quiet your mind and reduce stress, and it doesn't have to involve hours of sitting on the floor. Look into walking meditation or mindfulness meditation to add more awareness and calmness into your life. Meditation has also been shown to improve concentration, making it a great addition to a hectic job search routine. Check out community centers or natural health cooperatives for low-cost ways to learn more. There are also meditation apps for your smartphone that make it easy to add in a quick meditation break whenever you need it.

Remember that it is not only acceptable but important to find ways to relax and enjoy yourself during your job search. Interviewers look more favorably on job candidates who are interesting and well-rested. Spend time learning, playing and laughing so you are able to show your best side to potential employers while looking for a job.
