Be the Co-Worker Everyone Loves

Having a positive relationship with your co-workers is a vital part of maintaining a happy working life. If you aren't sure how to foster good feelings between yourself and your colleagues, follow these tips to become a more likable co-worker.

The first rule of being a likable co-worker is to be pleasant. Rudeness breeds resentment between co-workers and can quickly sour a relationship. The most likable co-workers are those who are always warm, welcoming and friendly. Make a point of smiling at colleagues, even if you are having a bad day.

A likable co-worker is always ready to help others. If you only do your assigned duties and never make any attempt to help your co-workers shoulder their own burdens, then you could gain a reputation as someone who is selfish, mean or aloof. If you want to be a likable co-worker, make a habit of asking those around you whether they need a hand with anything.

Respect your boss. Even if you think he is an incompetent idiot, it's best to keep your opinions to yourself. Badmouthing your boss behind his back shows disloyalty and can reflect very badly on you — especially if what you have been saying reaches your boss's ears. No matter how frustrated you are, act professionally at all times, whether or not your boss is within earshot.

You don't have to completely abandon your competitive streak to become a likable co-worker. A little competition in the workplace can be healthy, whether you are racing with a co-worker to finish your contribution to a project or striving to get the best sales record for the month. However, it's important not to become so wrapped up in competition that you forget that your rivals have feelings, too. Treat competitions at work as a bit of harmless fun, be gracious in victory and cheer on the victor when you are defeated.

Finally, remember to show your co-workers that you appreciate them. Taking the time to thank a co-worker who helped you out with a difficult project or who was there for you when you were having a bad day can help to foster a positive relationship. You don't have to make a big deal out of saying thank you; a sincere face-to-face thank you, a simple bunch of flowers or a heartfelt note can do the job for you.

Being a likable co-worker is an important part of developing in your career. The people who work alongside you could end up being useful contacts to draw on in future when you are looking for a job or hoping for a promotion. With this in mind, remember to make an effort to be a likable co-worker every day.
