    Testing for this position will be held on April 4, 2020 for those that qualify

    Firefighters are required to perform all tasks related to the basic functions of fire control, extinguishment, and fire prevention.  In addition, firefighters are expected to be competent in emergency medical treatment, hazardous materials response, and technical rescue skills such as confined space, vehicle, water, and rope rescue techniques.   A firefighter must be competent in the proper methods and techniques of forcible entry, ropes, portable extinguishers, ladders, fire hose, salvage, overhaul, fire streams, fire apparatus, ventilation, rescue, self-contained breathing apparatus, emergency medical treatment and inspection practices.   Firefighters must be willing to continually learn and advance in rank within the department.   He/She must promote good public relations for the Alton Fire Department and the City of Alton. A firefighter must perform all daily routine duties as well as any other duties assigned by supervising officers.

     

    Police Officer

    The Police Officer has the responsibility for general police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Work involves general police assignments, including field patrol, preliminary complaint and criminal investigation, traffic control, and accident investigation duties in a designated area on an assigned shift. Duties involve an element of personal danger and require that employees act without direct supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. Assignments could include investigative work in plain clothes as an investigator. After the probationary period, duty assignments are performed in accordance with established rules and regulations. General instructions are received from a superior officer who reviews work methods and results through reports, personal inspections, and discussions.
